Akhila began performing in small stages at the age of 14 and caught the attention of Devarajan Master, a renowned composer in the Malayalam film industry, through her mentor, Mr. Prakash. She then joined Devarajan Master's chorus group and got the opportunity to meet anchor Mala Parvaty, who recommended her for a TV show on Kairali TV. Akhila's anchoring career took off from there, and she became a popular face on various channels, including Asianet, Kairali, and Surya TV. She also worked as an MC for several live shows and made appearances on Doordarshan. In 2004, Akhila got married, but it did not deter her career ambitions. In 2006, Akhila's talent as a singer caught the attention of director Jayaraj during the making of his movie, "By the People." Sunil Parameswaran, the scriptwriter of the movie "Ananthabhadram," introduced Akhila to Jayaraj, and he was impressed by her live singing. Jayaraj then introduced Akhila as a playback singer for the movie "Aswaroodan," which released in the same year. The song was a duet with Jassie Gift titled "Azhakalila Manja Charadile Poothali."
